My Treasure
“The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the LORD” http://bible.us/Prov18.22.NLT
Happy birthday to my incredible wife! She makes me better than I am. Constantly amazes me with her wisdom and discernment. Challenges me to grow. I’m blessed to do life with Heather Corley. Happy Birthday Babe!
In the picture are my two competitors for here attention. They’re winning! But that’s OK.
Persistent Modification
Always think of this great list from Will Mancini as I look toward a new year and new endeavors:
What can I:
- combine?
- subtract?
- double?
- adapt?
- reduce?
- reinvent?
- cage?
- tweak?
- add?
- eliminate?
- amplify?
- modify?
- cut?
- accelerate?
- concentrate?
- stop?

Reflecting on World AIDS Day
This afternoon I passed a road-side Fruit Stand in my community and remembered the booming road side business I saw in Zimbabwe, Africa a few years ago: coffins/caskets. Praying today for a country where the life expectancy is 42 and 25% of the population is made up of orphans, due in large part to the World AIDS crisis. Glad to see the numbers going the other way, but remembering names and faces of friends, brother and sisters that are VERY close to this crisis. A few personal pics:

Widows gathered for prayer at Mbare Christian Fellowship in Harrare.

Kids at a Zim Orphanage receiving gifts from our community.

Thanksgiving Weekend
“Relax and rest. God has showered you with blessings. Soul, you’ve been rescued from death; Eye, you’ve been rescued from tears; And you, Foot, were kept from stumbling.” http://bible.us/Ps116.7.MSG
Enjoyed a restful Thanksgiving with family in Central Louisiana, including many of my 30+ first cousins getting together for our annual turkey feast & a change of pace BBQ dinner with Heather’s family in Pineville. Also, enjoyed a fruitful hunting trip with my boys and of course a fruitful Black Friday experience to get us way ahead for Christmas.

Probing Questions for a Church in Decline
Reading through the recent State of the Church series by the Barna group which tracked 20 years of trends in faith and religion looking for national patterns. Everyone bemoans the church in decline in America and these #’s add weight to the evidence. Our local #’s did as well. Never know quite what to do with #’s like these, but as a strategist and a curious explorer type, I like to ask why and how. Barna explores that through published books, but just looking at the numbers we can make some observations and ask some probing questions. Here’s some trends:
- Bible reading is down 5%. Is it because of new media and our society becoming less literate? Or has our emphasis on professional clergy and seminary education and the way those of us who have it talk about the Bible, taught people that they can’t understand the Bible apart from professionals?
- Volunteerism at church is down 8%. Is it because of more hired staff at churches and less opportunity for people to engage in religious service? Is there more emphasis on attending than participating today than before? Does the opportunities for involvement capture the hearts of post-modern people? Is there opportunities for every gifting, personality, skill set?
- Sunday School attendance is down 8%. Is it because less churches are using a Sunday School model? Has lecture format in Sunday school run its course? Is it because people are just too busy for a 2 hour commitment to Sunday School and church?
- Worship Attendance is down 9%. Are our worship services at optimal times for attendance? Has the emphasis on attendance as involvement (pay, pray, get out of the way) created a mindset in people that could not sustain them against other offerings in culture? Have we lost the battle to compete for market-share using consumer driven “come and see” approaches in the midst of worship wars?
- % of people who claim no affiliation went up 13% to now 37%. Is the church so irrelevant today that the halo effect doesn’t even drive people to at least verbally affiliate?
- People claiming to be born again is up 5%. Is this due to the rising popularity of political figures courting the evangelical movement? Is the word born-again becoming less of a problem for people? Or is our message really getting clearer to the masses and people are truly getting born-again?
- People believing that God is all-knowing, all-powerful and perfect Creator of the universe who still rules the world today is down 7% to 67% of the public. Are people seeing an all-powerful God at work through our churches?
- People believing that the Bible is totally accurate in all of the principles it teaches is down 8% to 38% of the public. Have people read the Bible and found it not accurate? or have they seen the lives of those of us claiming to live by its teachings and decided that it must be inaccurate at some points?
- Even among those claiming to be born-again Christians:
- Sunday School attendance dropped 14%.
- Volunteering at church dropped 12%.
- Worship attendance dropped 7%.
- Bible reading dropped 9%.
- Claiming no affiliation increased 5% to 19%.
Barna points out that the “only behavior that did not experience any real change was the % of adults who attend a church of 600 or more people.” And for born again christians attending a large church increased by 8%. Is this simply because there are more big churches today than ever before? Are bigger churches effective at disciple making? Or are bigger churches more appealing to consumer mindset? Are there any co-relations to be made about declines in discipleship behavior and practice and bigger churches?
AND, are we so absorbed with what’s going on “in here” (i.e. in MY church) that we don’t have time to think about those “out there” represented by these numbers? And these % represent people that need to know the God who is all-powerful who sent his Son that they may know eternal life as described in the book that they not sure is accurate.
What other questions should we be asking? Or do you have any answers to mine? Comment below or by email. :))>
Hurricane #Katrina
A few things I remember 6 years later:
- the weatherman saying, “a little jog to the west.”
- preaching Sun, Aug 28 to a small group of people who mostly had their bags packed for a nervous trip north.
- seeing my family drive away into the endless stream of cars heading north.
- the 3 hour drive that took 9 hours.
- the sound of generators running from miles around.
- the smell of pine sap, sweat, and bar oil. It’s forever burned into my nostrils.
- the trees. So many trees.
- 10 weeks without electricity.
- MRE’s and Southern Baptist cooked pastalaya.
- Countless volunteers, I wish I could remember all their names, who cooked, cut, constructed, & deconstructed.
- Rice crispy treats!!! Our church received a call, “Can you take the contents of a truck from TN?” “What’s in it?” “Not sure.” It was a truck load of rice crispy treats. Took forever to get rid of them. Still have night mares about rice crispy treats.
- Saying good-bye to friends who had to move away.
- The heart breaking sights and sounds in the city of New Orleans & the Gulf Coast.
- The day my family came home :)).
- Laying down in my bed for the first night with electricity and realizing the trees were no longer there to shade the street lights.
- Hearing people say Katrina was a good thing because it helped me realize I needed God and needed others.
12 Things I’m Thankful for after 12 Years of Marriage
12 years ago today I did something right. I married a most amazing woman. I grow more and more grateful for
her each day. Here’s 12 of the things I’m thankful for reflecting on our 12th Anniversary:
- “Find a good spouse, you find a good life-and even more: the favor of God!” Proverbs 18:22 (MSG). Thank God for showing His favor by giving me you!
- I started noticing in year one – People like me better when you’re around. Thanks for completing me.
- Finally realized around year three – I am better when you’re around. Thanks for making me better than I am.
- Two are better than one, because they never quit at the same time. Thanks for helping me persevere through tough times.
- It’s OK to not iron the tucked in portion of the shirt. Thanks for helping me to not sweat small stuff.
- A mother’s voice is a powerful weapon (Proverbs 31:26). Thanks for being a great mom to my boys.
- Unselfishness is a pre-requisite for success in almost everything, especially marriage. Thanks for demonstrating how to put others first so clearly.
- I’ve noticed, families that serve together make a greater impact. Thanks for serving along side me and opening my eyes to new opportunities everyday.
- Marriage is humiliating, b/c you can’t hide who you really are. Thanks for being patient and forgiving.
- Beauty is only skin deep, and I’m thankful for a wife who’s smokin hot, inside and out.
- Peach cobbler and red meat are still my favorites. Thanks for always going out of your way to know my favorites.
- “Lane, you know we only hired you, b/c we met your wife.” Thanks for inspiring confidence in me and others. I’m a better man because of you.
Incarnation-Transformation-Multiplication
Wrapping up a great week of ministry. A few things I’m grateful for:
- Incarnation: Bridge Church’s first building was a mobile home in St Tammany’s largest mobile home park. It is a
residential home and the residents are simply asked to live out the gospel and build relationships with residents that will lead to reproduction of disciples, leaders, and churches. Our second residents, Mauricio and Rebecca Hance moved in this weekend. Glad to have them on our team. Thanks to Brandon Bosarge for his 10 months of work in the park. He now passes the baton to the Hance’s. Just this week we were able to provide pastoral care for three families in the park facing crisis and two residents gave their lives to Christ at our weekly block party in the park. Incarnation is more than a fancy word on a Christmas card. For us, it’s about moving in to stay, being close and responsive to the needs of others. Hoping that our work at Oak Villa is multiplied many times across our region. - Transformation: Home Works of America had their summer session in Covington last week and repaired 4 homes in the
area. I was blessed to be able to spend some time working with Home Works on a home in the West 30’s owned by a disabled single mom. Her home suffered from storm damage, a house fire, and disrepair. Great to see the before and after transformation with a new roof, fresh paint. Still work to be done on the inside. 60 homes have been identified as substandard in the 8 block area known as the West 30’s. Much opportunity for transformation in this area. Next Home Works session will be October 8-9. - Multiplication: Prepping for and experiencing the power of multiplication in several areas of life and ministry right now.
After much work, our summer garden is finally to the point of overflowing and we’re experiencing the joy of plenty and of giving away. This can work for us in life as well. Our church has a small group that’s turning into a core group for a potential new church. Multiplication is just more fun. We’re also prepping for our fall training and network events for Church Multiplication on the Northshore. Two events I’m especially looking forward to: 1) September 8-10, Church Planter Basic Training at Woodland Park Baptist in Hammond. 2) Greenhouse w/Church Multiplication Associates, October 21-22 at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Check out our Northshore Baptist Association Church Planting page for more info and other noteworthy dates.
