Love and Respect: What She Needs, What He Needs
“Help me understand the opposite sex.” Today at Bridge church we got to Ephesians 5:22-33 in our Ephesians series, looking at what God’s commands to wives say about their husbands and vice versa. Dr. Emerson Eggerichs has a great book on this subject called Love and Respect. Here are the acrostics I shared today from the book. They say a lot about what she needs and what he needs. Hear these and past messages at http://bridgenorthshore.com.

10 Things Your Kids Should Catch You Doing
“Dad, I liked it better when you didn’t have an IPhone.” Heard these words from my oldest son several years ago. It was a wake up call and a reminder that everything I do as a parent is about teaching and proclaiming a message of what is valuable. And so much about faith and life is more CAUGHT than TAUGHT, so we must be ENGAGED. I loved this list that Carey Long shared with our church today.
10 Things Your Kids Should Catch You Doing as A Parent:
- Serving Others.
- Living w/Integrity and Humility.
- Chasing a Vision.
- Modeling a Godly Marriage.
- Respecting Authority.
- Admitting Mistakes and Asking for Forgiveness.
- Engaged in Worship and making Worship a priority.
- Studying your Bible.
- Practicing prayer.
- Depending on God.
What are your kids catching from your life?

Merry Christmas from the Corley’s!
We had an incredible and productive year! Started year two, planting Bridge Church in West St. Tammany and of working as Associate Director of Missions for the Northshore Baptist Association. I get to work with the best people in the world and have we’ve been greatly blessed with the new friends that God has brought into our lives this year. I’m excited about what God is bringing together in our Bridge Church family as we focus outward and give away ourselves and continue to receive from God. I’m also excited about new opportunities for church planting and ministry on the Northshore and beyond.
I’m blessed with a disciple-making, selfless wife, who challenges me everyday and makes me look better than I am. We celebrated 11 years of marriage this year. Jack (8) and Hudson (4) continue to keep me in shape as I strive to keep up with them. It’s awesome to see God shaping their hearts and minds.
This year we said goodbye for now to my Grandmother, Lorene “Jack” Francis. Her legacy and prayers continue to live on. She’ll be greatly missed but never forgotten.
I’m looking forward to 2011 and I’m praying that it’s a year of increase for you!

Our 8-year Old Takes On the Big Bang Theory
Hey Dad, the other day I was reading this book about science and it didn’t say that God created the world. It said that it was just a bunch of gas and dust that came together and earth came out. But that don’t make sense, cause we’ve got a lot of gas and dust in our house and it doesn’t create anything.
Keeps talking…
But then I thought, who made the gas and dust?
Exactly!!! Smart kid! Like his dad I suppose…
Reminded me of this story:
A summit of scientists believed that because they now had the power to create life, God was no longer needed. So they all decided that someone should go and tell God. One man volunteered to go. One day he climbed a mountain and called upon God. “God! We humans now have the ability to bring people from the dead, we can create our own life, we don’t need you anymore so you can leave us alone.” God listened to the scientist and nodded his head. “Okay, I’ll tell you what, if you can really create life, let’s have a competition, if you can create a better person than me, I’ll go.” So the scientist agrees and begins to collect some dirt to make his person. God simply watches him and finally asks him what he’s doing. “I’m using the dirt to make a person.” God smiles, looks at the scientist and replies, “Go make your own dirt.”
Fun Family Reunion (Pics)
Got to spend some time this weekend with my Francis family peeps in LaSalle Parish. Roasted Hog, Good Music, Inflatable Water Slide, fun rope swing, plenty of catching up, and a little Skyping with cousin/soldier in Afghanistan. Fun Day.
“Dad, what does this mean?”
So, Jackson’s turning 8 this week! He’s a ferocious reader and appears to have a photographic memory, so I’ve proposed a discipleship challenge for he and I this year. We’re going to read through the New Testament together and memorize one verse per week from the Topical Memory System. Harmless enough. We kicked off this week at the beginning in Matthew 1, New Living Translation. He’s reading along to me, pauses, and says, “Dad, what does this mean? – ‘he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born’ (Matthew 1:25). I think we will continue our pilgrimage in a different translation. It’s hard to see the little guys grow up and start asking harder questions.
11 Years of Favor From the Lord
“He who finds a wife finds a good thing & obtains favor from the LORD” http://esv.to/Prov18.22.
Today’s our 11th Anniversary! Thanking God for much favor, for a great wife, mom, partner in the Gospel, and best friend.
Just Like You
I think of this every year around Father’s Day.
There are little eyes upon you, and they are watching night and day;
There are little ears that quickly take in every word you say;
There are little hands all eager to do everything you do,
And a little boy who’s dreaming of the day he’ll be like you.
You’re the little fellow’s idol, you’re the wisest of the wise,
In his little mind about you, no suspicions ever rise;
He believes in you devoutly, holds that all you say and do,
He will say and do in your way when he’s grown up to be like you.
There’s a wide-eyed little fellow who believes you’re always right,
And his ears are always open and he watches day and night;
You are setting an example every day in all you do,
For the little boy who’s waiting to grow up to be like you.

A few Discipleship Tools for Kids
Loving the Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones. Really makes the stories in the Bible come to life in a way that spurs imagination and conversation. This morning we read the story of the hidden treasure from Matthew 13. The way the author described the treasure led our three year old to want more – “Was it heavy! Let me see it!” Always hard to stop with just one story.
We’ve kept a little book called My 1st Book of Questions and Answers by Carine MacKenzie around our dinner table for the past six months or so. Set up as a Catechism for young kids. Great for initiating further conversation about faith.
This summer I’m going to start a discipleship track with Jack, our seven year old. We’re going to use the Wheel
Illustration by the Navigators. He’s agreed to do it only if his wheel could be the Monster Truck version, which could also have some spiritual implications I’m sure.
Also looking forward to having him with me on several Faith In Action projects through our church this summer. Debriefing the plight of other peoples lives / why is there pain and evil in the world, has been a great faith builder for he and I.
Please share other ideas for discipling/connecting faith with family.
